A Pop Quiz on Evil in the New Testament - the surprising answers

It will probably surprise you to learn that the only one of those words which is ever associated with the adversary or the supernatural is the first one - poneros! Amazingly, the other words (which certainly come closer to the popular ideas of the nature of the devil!) are only found in verses which are talking about man - ordinary human beings. So that you may study this (if you have the urge to do so), a list of all of these verses is at the end of this page.

Further, the word poneros is only used in 15 verses to describe anything other than humans. Those verses are listed as well. For further study, I leave it to you to look at all of the verses where poneros is used to describe men or their actions.

Acts 19:15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? 16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

Ephe 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

1Joh 2:13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him [that is] from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one.
